What it won't do

This is a placement check, not a full diagnostic. It covers foundational skills only, so it will not tell you about longer words, suffixes, spelling or reading in connected text. If a student is secure on everything here and is still struggling, the difficulty is further along, and the last page tells you where to look next.

This isn't a worksheet made in an afternoon. It's the first page of a system I built over years: a full diagnostic, a scope and sequence, and written lessons for every concept on it, because nobody ever handed me one.

It's twenty-two pages. You'll use about six of them on any one child. That's the whole point.

WHO MADE THIS

If you were never really taught what to teach in reading, or in what order, you're not alone.

Almost none of us were. Most of us trained in a programme, not in the method underneath it. We were handed the most important subject in the room with no scope, no sequence, and no real training in how reading is actually built. So the scramble was never a discipline problem. You can't plan what you were never taught the shape of.

I know because I was there.

I'm Tina. I'd spend hours on my reading groups. Working out who went where, what each group should be doing, what I'd cover. And at the end of all those hours I still couldn't tell you why this skill and not another one, or what came next. I nodded along in planning meetings because I didn't have the words.

I sat in parent meetings with warmth and no plan, except for the oh so unhelpful advice of "please read more at home".

So I started building what nobody had given me: my own manuals, my own systems, my own cheat sheets. Years of them. This reading check is the first page of all of it, and it's yours, free.

Do I need to read it first?

No. Page 4 tells you where to begin. That is the only page you need before you sit down with a student.

Will this replace the programme I already use?

No. It tells you where a student actually is, which makes whatever you are already using land in the right place.

Is there a course to get through?

No. It is a printable document. Print it, use it this week, keep it.
